Truffle hunting has deep roots in the history of the Greek and Roman peoples. It survived the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, and continues to reveal its secrets to the present day.

In 2021, "Truffle Hunting and Extraction in Italy: Traditional Knowledge and Practices" was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
